Renaissance and Baroque
Chapters 9 and 10: Renaissance and Baroque
The Renaissance began in Italy
during the fourteenth century and spread throughout Europe. The word
Renaissance means “rebirth” because people became interested again in the art,
architecture, and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome. Renaissance architecture
emphasized symmetry, proportion, balance, and classical elements such as
columns, arches, and domes. Interiors often included decorative woodwork,
paintings, tapestries, and carefully crafted furniture.

The Baroque period developed during
the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Unlike the balanced and
restrained appearance associated with Renaissance design, Baroque architecture
focused on drama, movement, and grandeur. Architects and designers used curved
forms, elaborate decorations, marble, gold accents, grand staircases, and
dramatic lighting to create impressive spaces. Churches and palaces often used
these features to communicate religious devotion, wealth, and power.

I learned that these periods
demonstrate how architecture can express different ideas through materials,
shapes, decoration, and spatial organization. The Renaissance emphasized
harmony and classical beauty, while the Baroque emphasized emotion and visual
excitement. Both periods continue to influence interior architecture today.

Current Applications of Renaissance and Baroque Design
Modern designers continue to borrow
principles from these periods. Renaissance influences can be seen in balanced
furniture arrangements, classical moldings, and symmetrical rooms. Baroque
influences appear in luxurious materials, decorative lighting, dramatic
staircases, and bold focal points.

2. One Step Further: Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680)
was an influential Italian sculptor and architect who helped define the Baroque
period. I chose Bernini because his work shows how architecture, sculpture, and
lighting can come together to create dramatic and memorable spaces. His
sculptures often capture movement and emotion, while his architectural designs
use scale and spatial arrangement to guide people's attention.

One of Bernini's most famous
architectural projects is St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Its curved
colonnades surround the plaza and create a welcoming, monumental space. Inside
St. Peter's Basilica, his Baldacchino stands above the high altar, drawing
attention through its height, twisted columns, and elaborate bronze details.
Another important work is The
Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, located in the Cornaro Chapel in Rome. This
composition combines expressive sculpture, architectural framing, and carefully
directed light to create an emotional religious experience. His sculpture Apollo
and Daphne also demonstrates his ability to make marble appear full of
movement.
I find Bernini interesting because
his work shows that design is about more than appearance. The shape of a space,
the use of light, and the arrangement of artistic elements can affect how
people feel and what they notice. His work helped establish the dramatic
character of Baroque design and continues to inspire architects and interior
designers.
3. Closing Reflection
After learning about the
Renaissance and Baroque periods, I have a better understanding of how
historical styles influence modern interior architecture. My favorite part of
the Renaissance is its use of symmetry, proportion, and classical details to
create balanced spaces. I also appreciate the Baroque period because of its
dramatic forms, rich materials, and ability to create emotional experiences.
Studying Bernini helped me
understand how architecture, sculpture, and lighting can work together to shape
the way people experience a space. I can see these influences in modern
interiors through symmetrical layouts, classical moldings, luxurious materials,
and dramatic staircases. Overall, these chapters helped me realize that
successful interior design combines beauty, history, function, and the feelings
a space creates.
